Portrait of Neiman by Klapheck, printed in Porträtzeichnungen, 1992-2002, Schirmer/Mosel, 2002 p. 154; Klapheck wrote: « When Pierre Restany visited the Rhineland in 1956 in search of talent, he stayed with my mother for a few days. « Espaces imaginaires, » under this motto he was fighting at the time for a bevy of young lyrical-abstract artists. At the opening of the exhibition of Yves Klein in the gallery Schmela in Düsseldorf he spoke of a « geste limite » and shortly thereafter he founded with Yves, Tinguely, Arman, Spoerri, Niki de Saint Phalle, Heinz and others the group dr « Nouveaux Réalistes ». He lives with his wife and two cats in a creative chaos of old furniture, artworks by Yves Klein and Kadishman, and books on shelves and in boxes. Graceful and scarred by years of excessive living, this guru of the avant-garde exudes the dignity of a biblical sage. Our mutual friend Yehuda Neiman, sculptor, jewelry designer and photographer, helpfully , as always, organized the two portrait appointments for me.
